Kyle E. Thornhill Sr. Scholarship

The Kyle Thornhill Scholarship Fund Committee is excited to announce the opening of the Kyle E. Thornhill Sr. Scholarship application process for 2025! The application form and eligibility criteria are available for download below. All Campbell County High School Seniors who meet the guidelines are welcome to apply.

The Kyle Thornhill Scholarship Fund Committee will award multiple scholarships of $1000 this year. This scholarship award may be used for tuition or other expenses at any full-time college/university, community college, or technical school program in the United States during the fall semester in the year of high school graduation. The scholarship will be paid directly to the college or university.

All applications must be completed and submitted to the Guidance Office of each high school by Tuesday, April 22, 2025. All applications must be postmarked no later than Thursday, April 24, 2025. The Committee must receive all applications by Friday, May 2, 2025. Applications received after this date will not be considered.

The Kyle Thornhill Scholarship Fund Committee is now operating as a non-profit entity independent of the Campbell County Branch of the NAACP. The Branch continues to support the Scholarship in various ways as part of our education work.

Eligibility and Guidelines

Eligibility Requirements:


  • The student must have a transcript with a high school grade point average of 2.5 or higher in academic subjects in grades 9 through the 1st semester of 12th grade from one of Campbell County’s high schools (Altavista, Brookville, Rustburg, or William Campbell) in the state of Virginia.
  • The student must submit two letters of recommendation (from teachers, guidance counselor, employer, friend, etc.).
  • The student must list academic awards, school extracurricular activities and community service.
  • The student must submit an essay of 500--750 words describing career goals, how community service has played a part in shaping those goals, and/or any challenge or obstacle the student has overcome and how that experience will help you succeed in college and beyond.
  • The student must submit the completed application to the Scholarship Committee on or before the stated deadline below for consideration.



Guidelines:


  • Multiple scholarships in the amount of $1,000 are established annually to assist Campbell County high school seniors with college related expenses.  The recipients of the awards must be enrolled/attending as full-time students in a one-year to four-year educational institution (community college/university or technical school) during the fall semester of the same year as their high school graduation.
  • The recipients must graduate from a Campbell County high school in the state of Virginia.
  • The Scholarship Committee will review the entire application package for consideration of the scholarship awards.  Incomplete applications or applications that do not meet eligibility criteria will not be considered for the scholarships.
  • The funds will be paid directly to the educational institutions and placed in the student accounts.  Each scholarship recipient is responsible for supplying the appropriate information (student ID number and payment address of educational institution) to the Kyle Thornhill Scholarship Fund to facilitate payment by July 15th.
